Every junior designer has heard the phrase “less is more.” What they often miss is that less is only more when the remaining elements are given room to breathe. Whitespace, or negative space, is what makes that possible.

Whitespace Is Not Wasted Space

Clients sometimes view large margins as unused real estate. The opposite is true. Whitespace directs the eye, groups related content, and reduces cognitive load. Without it, even the best typography and imagery become noise.

Micro vs Macro Whitespace

• Micro whitespace: The space between letters, lines, and small elements. It affects readability.
• Macro whitespace: The large gaps between sections and major layout blocks. It shapes structure.

Guidelines for Better Spacing

Use a consistent spacing scale, typically based on an eight-pixel grid. This creates rhythm and makes decisions easier. Do not arbitrarily vary margins. Every space should serve hierarchy or grouping.

The most elegant websites often feel spacious. That feeling is intentional, not accidental.
